THE BUILDINGS OF BRITAIN is a series designed to be of maximum practical help to the reader with an interest in a particular period of periods in the architecture of England, Wales and Scotland. Each volume contains a concise historical account of a single period, and a descriptive gazetteer, with regional maps, indicating where its finest and most typical buildings are to be found. The period covered by STUART AND BAROQUE – the Civil War to the death of Queen Anne – saw the full emergence of British architecture from its recent medieval past, under European influence and the spurs to building provided by the Restoration, the Great Fire of London, and the Revolution of 1688-9. The 17th century, and this period, belong some of the most illustrious names in British architecture – in England – Inigo Jones, Pratt, Wren, Vanbrugh, Hawksmoor, Archer, Gibbs; and in Scotland – Bruce, James Smith and William Adam. One hundred and twenty black and white photographs and plans show representative and important buildings discussed in the text. The Gazetteer lists some 1,100 buildings, which are also located on the maps, and includes concise mention of the outstanding features of each.
