de Paor has taught History, Irish Studies, and Archaeology at schools.
Another book in what has become a plethora of general surveys on Irish history. This one traces the various colonizations that Ireland has undergone, giving particular attention to the country's long and often turbulent relationship with England. Scant attention is paid to recent developments. Although readable, the book offers no new perspectives. It should have some appeal for general readers and informed laypersons, but for those seeking interpretive books on Irish history, Robert Kee's Ireland: a history ( LJ 4/15/82) and John Ranelagh's Ireland: an illustrated history ( LJ 9/15/81) will be more useful.
