The problem with a revolution is you never know who's really on board and who's still catching up. A full generation after the sexual revolution, Kerry Riley and his wife, Diane, sexuality workshop leaders in Australia, have written a beginner's guide to conscious intercourse for men. First published in Australia in 1995, the tone of the book may be maddeningly outdated for men and women who've already done some personal growth "Many people today are seeking spiritual growth. When I tell them that Diane and I use our sexual love as a way of becoming more spiritual, they are quite shocked." Or "Indeed, it has helped me considerably in my relationship to accept that in some ways women are aliens. They often have different priorities." But if readers hang in there, beyond the worn psychologizing they may find the specific sexual techniques engaging. The Rileys offer practices for lovemaking from a primarily male maintaining an erection as long as desired, working with breath and muscle control during intercourse, and connecting with one's partner through chakras during sex. Several techniques are designed to create intimacy without intercourse, such as "The Scissors," "The Bonding Technique," soft-entry intercourse, and karezza, Italian for caress, a technique where a couple lies in union, perfectly still, without the usual movement of intercourse. These "energetic lovemaking" techniques, as Riley explains it, help a couple experience an intimate, emotional connection with energies subtler than a typical orgasm. The authors give a lot of focus to ejaculation control, both for younger men who want to slow down orgasm and for older men whose sexual energy is waning as their partner's is increasing. Throughout, line drawings make each sexual position clear.But if the audience Riley hopes to reach is as obtuse as his writing sometimes makes it out to be, then his discussions of Tantric sex, Taoism, the Hindu goddess Kali, and "jewel honoring" may fall on deaf ears. --Rebecca Taylor
