9780099362210: In Search of Lost Time: Swann's Way Vol 1 (Vintage Classics)

In Search of Lost Time or Remembrance of Things Past (French: la recherche du temps perdu) is a semi-autobiographical novel in seven volumes by Marcel Proust. His most prominent work, it is popularly known for its extended length and the notion of involuntary memory, the most famous example being the "episode of the madeleine". Still widely referred to in English as Remembrance of Things Past, the title In Search of Lost Time, a more accurate rendering of the French, has gained in usage since D.J. Enright's 1992 revision of the earlier translation by C.K. Scott-Moncrieff and Terence Kilmartin. About the Author:

Marcel Proust was born in Auteuil in 1871. In his twenties he became a conspicuous society figure, frequenting the most fashionable Paris salons of the day. After 1899, however, his suffering from chronic asthma, the death of his parents and his growing disillusionment with humanity caused him to lead an increasingly retired life. He slept by day and worked by night, writing letters and devoting himself to the completion of A la recherche du temps perdu. He died in 1922 before publication of the last three volumes of his great work.

Review:

Audie Award winner Simon Vance (see Behind the Mike, LJ 11/15/08) elegantly narrates this first volume in Proust s poetic seven-volume work, first published in 1913 and alternately translated as Remembrance of Things Past and In Search of Lost Time. In it, the anonymous narrator s flowing reminiscences about Parisian high society explore and re-explore personalities, relationships, and frustrated ambitions. Those who consider Proust s monumental work to be one of the finest novels of the 20th century will enjoy this title; others may find it intolerably heavy going, particularly on audio. Vance s handling of the sweeping narrative, however, is excellent, recommending this title where there is interest. --Library Journal
