Tom and his grandfather, whom Tom calls Collar, go for a walk. Tom, determined to play in puddles, has put on his wellies, but his grandfather insists that it hasn't rained "in ages." However, Tom--who has named the puddles after his family members--says they will be there. Leaving his grandfather behind and running along the road to look for them, Tom meets the Puddleman, who carries a stack of puddles on his back, and helps the man place the puddles on the road. As in The Snowman (1978), Briggs uses touches of magical realism in this a charmingly wacky tale. Soft colored-pencil artwork and skillful use of panels of different sizes keep the story moving. Any kid who has ever jumped into a puddle will appreciate the whimsy. Kat Kan
