Ages 5-8. "Secretly the snow had fallen all night long." Elsa, out playing, makes a snow angel in her secret place. She tells her little brother, Jack, that the spot is the place a snow angel slept. Jack wishes he could see a snow angel "more than anything else in the whole world." His wish comes true, but it takes three nights for Elsa to believe him. She returns to the place and lies down in the angel's shape, and when she sits up, "snow wings had begun to grow." Fletcher's muted palette is a perfect foil for McAllister's cheery fantasy. The paintings have a quiet, old-fashioned charm yet seem alive with realistic motion. McAllister's affectionate, matter-of-fact acceptance of magic in everyday life and graceful language combine to produce a gratifying, sentimental read-aloud that will generate sighs of contentment from reader and listener alike.
