Safe houses and secret message drops, double crosses and defections - it sounds like the stuff of sophisticated espionage, but the agents and moles are schoolboys engaged in harmless play.
John Creevey doesn't know this. To him, the messages he painstakingly decodes are the communications of dangerous men, and as he comes face to face with the fact of his beloved wife Jennifer's defection, he begins to see a way to get back at the man she left him for.
And soon the boys are playing more than just a game....

Ruth Rendell is the recipient of several awards, including three Edgars and four Gold Daggers from the UK’s Crime Writers’ Association. Simisola, Blood Lines, Keys to the Street, and The Brimstone Wedding (written as Barbara Vine) are available from Brilliance Audio. She lives in England.
YA Another compelling novel of psychological suspense from Rendell. The characters, a group of teenage boys playing espionage games and a lonely man facing his wife's desertion, are introduced through a first-person narrative which at first barely allows readers to understand how they relate to each other. Slowly the characters' lives become intertwined through the discovery of secret messages and unsolved codes. The suspense builds as readers realize that the misconceptions that each character holds can lead to disaster and that the teenage espionage games actually deal with a man's life. A wonderful novel that will intrigue young adult readers. Susan Penny, Houston Public Library
