Synopsis
As Hitler's power begins to threaten the rest of Europe, Inge Wendler- a young Jewish woman- realizes that she and her husband must leave Vienna. Over forty years later, in Sydney, she bestows a legacy on a visiting Oxford historian come to research the life of Walter Benjamin: diaries and letters which vividly recall that distant past. And so we learn of Inge's former life, her husband's love for another woman, her own struggles to keep her marriage alive- and finally of their perilous escape to a Spanish border town...where both freedom and tragedy awaited them.
