From Kirkus Reviews:
When Jenny says she wants a real bear, her mother helps her clean out their old shed to make a den, which they furnish with Jenny's ``hundreds'' of toy bears. And though Mom says it's not possible, a real bear does turn up in time to share Jenny's pretend tea (sharp-eyed readers may note how heavy Jenny's eyes look just before this happens); then, after a discouragingly long absence, the bear comes back with several of his friends. This time, he's brought the tea--``pretend, of course.'' The gently humorous text deftly conveys the delicate boundary between fantasy and reality in a child's play. Goulding provides an adorable crowd of bears, both toy and ``real,'' in her warmhearted watercolors; pictures of Jenny reading sad and funny stories to her huge, affectionate visitor, and later hugging him goodbye, are especially appealing. Perfect for a preschool story time--especially if the children have been invited to bring along their own bears. (Picture book. 4-7) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
From Publishers Weekly:
This welcome addition to the list of teddy bear books is a cozy offering about a girl who hopes a real bear will visit her. In preparation, Jenny helps her mother clean the garden shed, decorating it with her toy bears. The ensuing events--about "pretend tea" and the power of imagination--are pure childhood fantasy unshadowed by adult realism, as Jenny's wish comes true in enchanting fashion. Ratnett's unaffected text, sweet without being cloying, plays nicely against the fantasy elements--Jenny's mother, for example, views her daughter's daydream kindly and realistically: "You know there wasn't really a bear, don't you?" Goulding's pastel watercolors are homey and comforting; her "biggest, brownest, friendliest-looking bear" is precisely that--an oversized teddy bear come to life to charm all who believe that wishes can come true. The illustration of Jenny and her new friend rolling with laughter on the sofa is especially endearing. Ages 4-8.
