There are 9,750 community pharmacies in England. For this report, the National Audit Office examined the changing role of the community pharmacist and the management of the service, the measures taken to secure an accessible community pharmaceutical service, the structure of community pharmacists' remuneration, and the reimbursement of the cost of drugs dispensed by community pharmacists. The report concludes that long-term savings could be made by the Department of Health in its dealings with community pharmacies and a more cost-effective service obtained, and outlines the necessary steps for achieving these.
