Synopsis
This second edition of Ottley's monumental reference work provides a list of over 8,000 books, parts of books, pamphlets and academic theses on the history and description of public rail transport in the British Isles and is a reprint of the original 1966 edition (with minor typographical errors corrected). An asterisk beside an entry indicates that the Supplement (published in 1984 and covering an additional 5,000 items) includes descriptions of later editions of the item. The two volumes (and the further Second Supplement) constitute a classified documentation, fully indexed, of rail transport development in the British Isles from the mineral wagonways of the 17th and 18th centuries through the Railway Age of Victorian and Edwardian Britain and Ireland down to the modern urban tramways and the Rail 150 Celebration of 1980. This volume also contains magnificent detailed foldout charts showing the corporate family history of Britain's major railways. 683 pages.

It is based largely on British Library holdings, but with additional listings for types of materials not regularly deposited there (e.g., unpublished theses). The range of material covered is enormous. In addition to sections devoted to rail transport at particular times and in particular areas, other major chapters cover such fields as railway civil engineering, administration, management and operation, individual railway companies, the railway in art and in literature, directories, gazetteers, atlases etc etc. Everything is excellently indexed and there is a useful folding chart of rail company history.
