In the past two decades, researchers have made greater strides in understanding virus-insect-plant interactions then the totality of knowledge gained during the previous fifty years. Much of this progress has resulted from the development and application of new technologies, as well as novel improvements and applications of old ones, to understanding and resolving problems caused by a variety of plant virus-insect vector transmission systems. Forty-two of the world's leading and most respected authorities in this field of research present and discuss these recent breakthroughs and, when possible, their significance with respect to devising innovative approaches to interrupting or suppressing transmission cycles and, hence, preventing or lessening disease spread.
