The editors present a book on global biogeochemistry by an international group of leading scientists that summarizes the interactions and linkages between ocean, land, and atmosphere. Chapters explore the role of these interactions in earth system analysis and discuss likely future developments. Emphasis is given to the global carbon and nitrogen cycles, including the role of soils. The specific features of biogeochemical cycles in major biomes (rainforest, savanna, boreal forest, and arctic) are analyzed, as are earth systems interactions on geological time scales. Because the anthropogenic effects of fossil fuel emission and land-use change dominate some of the natural effects in global biogeochemical cycles, the book also covers the socioeconomic aspects of global change.
