About one hundred years ago, a young Swiss physician, Friedrich Miescher, published the first paper on "nuclein" (or cucleohistone in current terminology) and thus launched chemical research on nucleic acids. Nearly twenty-five years ago, nucleic acid was identified as the physical basis of genes, and since that time the quest for knowledge on genes rightfully has become a major thrust in modern biological research.
