About the Author:
Julie Bissell, M.A., OTR, graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a B.A. degree in ergonomics and physical education. She completed an M.A. degree in occupational therapy through the University of Southern California. She has coordinated occupational therapy and physical therapy services for the Anaheim City School District for the past sixteen years, developing programs for children with specific learning disabilities, autism, developmental delays, multiple handicaps, orthopedic handicaps, attention deficit, sensory processing disorders, and emotional disturbance. She also serves on the Board of Counselors for the USC Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy.

Jean Fisher, M.A., OTR, graduated from Mount St. Mary's College with a degree in art and a minor in chemistry. She received a certificate and a master of arts degree in occupational therapy from the University of Southern California. She has been practicing occupational therapy for 37 years. She set up an Occupational Therapy Department at the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center in the early 1960s and worked as an independent contractor and feeding consultant with cerebral palsy children in the 1970s. Today, she works as a consultant for five Orange County school districts, including the Anaheim City School District.

Carol Owens, OTR, graduated from San Jose State University with a bachelor of science degree in occupational therapy. She has worked for the past twenty years in the California public school system, including sixteen years with the Anaheim City School District, serving students who have neurodevelopmental delays and orthopedic handicaps. Her practice includes children with specific learning disabilities, autism, visual handicaps, sensory processing problems, and attention deficit disorders.

Patricia Polcyn, OTR, graduated from Western Michigan University with a bachelor of science degree in occupational therapy in 1977. She is self-employed, and her practice involves provision of occupational therapy services for six public school districts in Orange County, California. She lectures for local colleges, parent groups, and school district staff. She is a fieldwork supervisor for OT and COTA students and has contracts with a number of colleges and universities.
