About the Cover Art

The cover shows the first 200-inch mirror disk cast by men and women at Corning Glass Works in March 1934 under the direction of George V. McCauley. The roughly 20 tons of glass is a Pyrex®-type sodium borosilicate (see Table 1-1 for composition). This first casting cracked in a few places during cooling and is displayed at the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York. Viewers can see the ethereal beauty of glass even with the cracks. The second casting was successful and is mounted at the Hale Telescope Observatory, Palomar Mountain, California, and has been functional since 1948. The very precise mirror geometry allows us to see the heavens "beyond the stars." To the authors, the effort represents glass science and technology at its best in the quest for humankind’s greater understanding of itself.
