Grade 3-6 The authors of Easy-to-Make Spaceships That Really Fly (1983), Easy-to-Make Water Toys That Really Work (1985), and Spacecrafting: Invent Your Own Flying Spaceships (1986, all Prentice-Hall) have produced another successful craft book. This volume fea tures action toys such as tops, wind toys, and cars. The projects are made from recycled objects (plastic soda bot tles), simple materials found at home (paper plates and cups), and inexpen sive items (ping pong balls). Some pro jects call for the use of food in their construction (chewed gum for use as ``glue,'' and gumballs, lifesavers, and carrot slices employed as wheels). Clearly-stated directions are accompa nied by simple diagrams illustrating each step of the construction. The style is lively and readable. A brief section on safety is included, with several guidelines restated in the instructions for individual projects. General tips on ``jazzing up'' the toys is complemented by repeated encouragement for chil dren to design their own creations, pro viding an excellent springboard for young inventors.
