ORGANIZATION OF THE BOOK

The protection of persons, physical assets, and information is a concern at every level of society. From the individual to the giant organization, the need for safety and security is a basic requirement. However, due to limited resources or lack of ability to confront numerous noncriminal risks, public law enforcement agencies are unable to provide adequate protection against the multitude of foreseeable threats. In addition to the fear of crime, numerous hazards exist that threaten personal safety and property. Natural disasters and environmental mishaps can be disastrous. Technological advances create opportunities for invasions of privacy and nonphysical intrusion into organizational databases. Consequently, security services have experienced tremendous growth, both in terms of the number of personnel employed and the financial investment in loss prevention and asset protection.

Security Management: An Introduction utilizes a unique approach as it presents management strategies for loss prevention as well as an overview of the security field. It identifies over 20 security environments, applications and services, and examines issues encountered within these areas. The book incorporates the findings of the 1997 American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS)/Webster University Education Symposium as well as the proceedings of the 1998 and 1999 ASIS Academic/Practitioner Symposiums. Although the ASIS symposium products are still works in progress, this book addresses and makes reference to the topics outlined in the 1998 ASIS recommendations for introduction to security courses for business students. This book may be used as a text in security management, criminal justice, or business courses, or as a reference for security managers. Practitioners working within specific security venues can use the book to familiarize themselves with other applications in the security industry.

Chapter 1 presents an introduction to the world of security management. It addresses the nature, scope, and history of security services, the essential elements of security, types of security organizations, regulation and professionalism, the impact of economic and social globalization, and the future of security management. Chapter 2 identifies criminal as well as noncriminal threats to individuals and organizations. Chapter 3 confronts the legal issues associated with security management. Chapter 4 defines and outlines the process of risk management, security planning, and program administration. Chapters 5, 6, and 7 address the security management triad: physical, personnel, and information security. Investigations, criminal and business intelligence operations, and reporting are the subjects in Chapter 8. Over 20 identifiable security environments, applications, and services in specific settings are addressed in Chapters 9 and 10. The appendices include a correlation of the ASIS Symposium topics with the book's contents and a sample safety and security survey instrument. Each chapter begins with a set of learning objectives and ends with a summary, a list of key terms, and discussion questions and exercises to enhance critical thinking and knowledge acquisition.
