QuickBooks® Pro 2002: A Complete Course is a comprehensive instructional learning resource. This text has been designed to respond to the growing trend toward adopting Windows applications and computerizing accounting systems. As a result of this trend, the text provides training using Windows® XP and the popular QuickBooks® Pro 2002 accounting program. The text was written using Windows XP and QuickBooks® Pro 2002 but may be used with Windows 95/98/2000 and QuickBooks® Basic or Premier versions.

ORGANIZATIONAL FEATURES

QuickBooks® Pro 2002: A Complete Course is designed to present accounting concepts and their relationship to QuickBooks® Pro 2002. In addition to accounting concepts, students use a fictitious company and receive hands-on training in the use of QuickBooks® Pro 2002 within each chapter. At the end of every chapter, the concepts and applications learned are reinforced by the completion of true/false, multiple-choice, fill-in, and essay questions plus an application problem using a different fictitious company. At the end of the text, there is a comprehensive practice set that utilizes all the major concepts and transactions presented within the textbook.

The text introduces students to the computer, Windows, and QuickBooks accounting for a service business, a merchandising business, payroll, and company setup for QuickBooks. The appendices review Windows and disk duplication; QuickBooks Integration using Word and Excel; QuickBooks Features including QuickBooks Notes, Time Tracking, Job Costing, and Price Levels; and QuickBooks Online including online updates, payroll services, downloading a trial version of the software, online banking and payments, personalized web sites and domain names, credit check services, fax services, merchant services, online billing, online credit card billing, online backup services, and direct deposit.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Throughout the text, emphasis has been placed on the use of QuickBooks' innovative approach to recording accounting transactions based on a business form rather than using the traditional journal format. This approach, however, has been correlated to traditional accounting through adjusting entries, end-of-period procedures, and use of the "behind the scenes" journal.

Unlike many other computerized accounting programs, QuickBooks is user-friendly when corrections and adjustments are required. The ease of corrections and the ramifications as a result of this ease are explored thoroughly.

Accounting concepts and the use of QuickBooks® Pro 2002 are reinforced throughout the text with the use of graphics that show completed transactions, reports, and QuickBooks screens. The text helps students transition from textbook transaction analysis to "real-world" transaction analysis.

The text provides extensive assignment material in the form of tutorials, end-of-chapter questions (true/false, multiple-choice, fill-in, and essay), practice sets for each section, and a comprehensive practice set.

Students develop confidence in recording business transactions using an up-to-date commercial software program designed for small to mid-size businesses. With thorough exploration of the program in the text, students should be able to use QuickBooks® Pro 2002 in a "real world service business" at the completion of the textbook training.

Students will explore and use many of the features of QuickBooks as it pertains to a service business, including recording transactions, preparing a multitude of reports, closing an accounting period, compiling charts and graphs, and preparing the payroll.

COURSES

QuickBooks® Pro 2002: A Complete Course is designed for a one-term course in microcomputer accounting. This text covers a service business, a merchandising business, a sole proprietorship, a partnership, payroll, and company setup to use QuickBooks. For a short course in microcomputer accounting or for use in any accounting course requiring introductory work on an integrated computerized accounting package QuickBooks® Pro 2002: A Complete Course may be used. Students should be familiar with the accounting cycle and how it is related to a service business. No prior knowledge of or experience with computers, Windows, or QuickBooks is required.

SUPPLEMENTS FOR THE INSTRUCTOR

Instructor's Manual and Teaching Guide with Tests is a comprehensive answer key to all the questions, the exercises, the exams, and the practice sets. All computer assignments are printed in full and included for use in grading or as a student answer key. In addition to answers to text assignments, the Instructor's Manual and Teaching Guide with Tests for QuickBooks® Pro 2002: A Complete Course contains master data files for all the companies in the text, backup company files for each chapter that may be restored to a QuickBooks company file, a sample course outline, lectures for each chapter, an exam for the text, an exam for the practice set, and suggestions for grading. Lecture materials include a lecture outline for each chapter, a hands-on demonstration lecture, the answers to the end-of-chapter questions and the amounts of reports and documents listed on the transmittal sheets.
