Synopsis

This book is intended to serve as an introduction to the principles and techniques used in the field of chemical, petroleum, and environmental engineering. Although the range of subjects deemed to be in the province of chemical engineering has broadened over the last decade, the basic principles involved in chemical engineering remain the same. This book lays a foundation of certain information and skills that can be repeatedly employed in subsequent courses as well as in professional life. Much of the previous edition has been rewritten. One new topic (Chapter 20) on adsorption has been added.Reorganization: Although each chapter has been revised, the sequence of the topics and the format remain about the same. The Seventh edition takes individual topics that were previously in one long chapter, and makes them individual short chapters of them so that readers can feel a sense of accomplishment more rapidly and review more definitively. In addition to the revised learning tutorial placed on CD, the new edition boasts revamped problem solving strategy (now emphasized in all of the examples) and brand new problems to solve (35% of the problems are brand new).

From the Publisher

This student-friendly introduction to the principles and calculations used in the field of chemical, petroleum, and environmental engineering is designed to help students 1) develop systematic problem-solving skills, 2) learn what material balances are, how to formulate, apply, and solve them, 3) learn what energy balances are and how to apply them, and 4) learn how to deal with the complexity of big problems. Self-contained in approach, it provides all necessary background information on units and measurement, physical properties, basic laws about the behavior of gases, liquids, and solids, and some basic mathematical tools.

From the Back Cover

Now in its sixth edition, this book is the definitive introduction to chemical engineering principles and calculations. A CD-ROM and computer disk are included, offering worked out problems for each section of the book, plus POLYMATH, FORTRAN programs, and YAW's data. Covers the principles and techniques of chemical engineering involving gases, vapors, liquids and solids; shows how to formulate and solve problems in chemical engineering; and describes the proper use of units, physical properties and computers in solving material and energy balances. For chemical engineers and technicians, and professionals in the fields of environmental engineering and petroleum engineering.
