From the Inside Flap:
Preface

This book is a complete guide to IBM's DB2 Universal Database Enterprise-Extended Edition. DB2 Universal Database (UDB) Enterprise-Extended Edition (EEE) is available on AIX, Windows NT, and Sun Solaris. This book, however, was written from a UNIX, specifically AIX operating system perspective. There may be some differences in the implementation of the DB2 UDB EEE product on these operating systems, but since they are not part of the certification testing for the IBM UDB for Cluster Exam, they are not covered in this publication. If you would like to become a Certified IBM Advanced Technical Expert on DB2 Universal Database V5, or you would simply like to understand the powerful DB2 UDB EEE product, then read on.

Designing and Implementing a Database - When dealing with gigabytes or even terabytes of data, you need optimal logical and physical data placement. This chapter takes you through each logical step, explaining the relationship between the objects, followed by sections that help you to perform the activity with detail on the commands used. . ¥¥

Loading Data - Chapter four discusses the methods available to get data into your cluster database, with discussion on each method so that you can choose the opimal method for your environment. Managing Data - This chapter covers activities that the database administrator must know. For example, there is a very detailed section covering what to do when your hardware configuration changes and how to rebalance your data. Also, how to efficiently back up and restore data is discussed. back up and restore data is discussed. ¥¥

Performance Tuning and Problem Determination - These chapters look at the tuning parameters in a cluster environment. For complex queries, you need to understand what is happening during the execution of that query. The output from the explain facilities is detailed so that you not only understand what is happening during execution, but you can also learn how to influence the optimizer to improve performance. How This Book was Created This book was a joint effort between the Austin ITSO (International Technical Support Organization) and the IBM Toronto Lab. The ITSO is a group within IBM whose mission is to provide skill transfer on new products and emerging technology on a worldwide basis. We provide direct feedback to the IBM software labs as we gather input from various groups of DB2 users, including IBM support personnel, customers and business partners. The ITSO provides a working envionment for interested individuals to work with new IBM software products. These individuals may include IBM employees and customers. Each team develops a workshop or book, known as a redbook. The ITSO provides a working envionment for interested individuals to work with new IBM software products.
