From the Inside Flap

Preface

The SELECT, Lab Series uses a class-tested, highly visual, project-based approach that teaches students through tasks that use step-by-step instructions. You will find extensive 4-color figures that guide learners through the basic skills and procedures necessary to demonstrate proficiency using each software application.

SELECT Lab Series; Advanced Projects for Microsoft® Access 2000 introduces an all-new design with ample space for note taking. The easy-to-follow, clean presentation uses bold color and a unique design program that helps reduce distraction and keeps students focused and interested as they work. We have developed additional instructional features to further enhance the students' learning experience as well as provide the opportunity for those who want to go beyond the scope of the book to explore the features of Access 2000 on the Web. Each project concludes with a review, section that includes a Summary, Key Terms and Operations, Study Questions (multiple choice, short answer, fill-in, and discussion), and two Hands-On Exercises: In 4cldition, two to six On Your Own Exercises provide students the opportunity to practice and gain further experience with the material covered in the projects. Microsoft Certification

The content of this text is driven by the Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) guidelines, and the author has developed the material from the ground up to reflect these objectives. Everyone who masters the projects in this text will be prepared to take the expert level exam in Microsoft® Office 2000. It is becoming more and more important in today's competitive job market to have the skills necessary to be productive with today's most widely used applications software. SELECT Lab Series: Advanced Projects for Microsoft® Access 2000 is designed with this purpose in mind. Access 2000

The new Microsoft® Access 2000 features improved tools that simplify traditional Access-processing tasks and adds an expanded menu of Web-related capabilities and e-mail integration. Ten new SELECT: Advanced Projects for Microsoft® Access 2000 introduce students to features of Access, focusing on the MOUS objectives needed to prepare students for the expert certification exam. Features Running Case

The Selections, Inc. Department store is an all-new case for SELECT Lab Series: Projects for Microsoft® Access 2000. As a Running Case, Selections, Inc. puts students in an environment they can relate to, both as students and as future professionals. Each project begins with a scenario that puts students in the department store where they perform tasks that relate to a particular area or division of the store. For example, this Advanced Access module has students create product information for Ritchey Bicycles. Using Access 2000's powerful tools, the students integrate various graphics into company brochures for printing or publishing on the web.

Students relate what they're doing in Access 2000 to a real-world situation that helps prepare them for what they may encounter in the business world as professionals. Challenge/Solution/Setup

Once the student is familiar with the Running Case scenario for the project, the Challenge explains what they are actually going to do as they work through the tasks, and the Solution summarizes a plan for achieving that goal. The Setup provides the settings necessary to ensure that the screen the student sees will match what is shown in the book. Web Tip

This all-new feature provides the student with links to helpful Web sites and tips for locating additional information about specific topics on the World Wide Web. Web Tips often relate to Access 2000, but include tips students can use in their everyday lives. Each project contains numerous Web Tips that encourage students to explore Web sites that relate to the tasks they are performing in the application, highlight professional organizations that enhance the material, or direct them to topics of interest on their own. Because the Web is constantly changing, some links referenced in Web Tips may become inactive during the course. Check Point

Check Points are placed at intervals throughout each project and provide review questions that seek to assess a student's conceptual or procedural understanding of the current task. Break Point

Each project n in SELECT: Advanced Projects for Microsoft® Access 2000 has been designed to take approximately one hour in the lab. Because students learn at different paces or may not have a full hour to complete a project, the Break Point feature appears at about the midpoint in each project and alerts students of a good stopping point if they need a break but want to continue the project later. Break Points take the guess work out of having to decide whether or not it's appropriate to stop, and make it easier for students to start working on a project that they may not have time to complete. Tips and Troubleshooting Boxes

These feature boxes, popular with both instructors and students, appear throughout the text and have been revised and updated for SELECT: Advanced Projects for Microsoft® Access 2000.

Tip boxes include material that may be useful but that is not required in the step-by-step task instructions.

Troubleshooting boxes include material that may be useful but that is not required in the step-by-step task instructions.

The Introduction sets the stage for the project and explains its purpose. Clearly defined and measurable Objectives outline the skills covered. The Running Case puts the student in the real-life environment of the Selections, Inc. department store. The Setup tells the students exactly which settings should be chosen so their computer screens match the illustrations in the book. Each topic begins with a brief introductory paragraph that explains the concepts and operations students will learn. The Challenge states the reasoning for the project. The Solution describes the plan for completing the project, which consists of tasks leading to the final product. An illustration shows the typical screen the student will see. Appropriate, full-color illustrations move the emphasis away from text and toward the visual-based application. Tip and Troubleshooting boxes appear at appropriate places throughout each project to highlight important, helpful information pertinent to the topic being discussed. New Check Points reinforce a concept. Clearly defined Tasks guide students step-by-step through each process, providing reassurance and increasing confidence for independent or group work. Web Tip boxes refer students to Internet sites and offer helpful information about using the World Wide Web. New Break Points show where students can pause within a project. A Summary in bulleted-list format further reinforces the Objectives and the material presented in the project. Key terms are boldface and italicized throughout each project, and then listed for handy review in the summary section at the end of the project. Study questions bring the content of the project into focus again and allow for independent or group review of the material learned. In-depth Hands-On Exercises present tasks for building on the skills acquired in the project. Two to Six On Your Own Exercises are provided to invoke critical thinking and integration of project skills. Appendix

The SELECT: Advanced Projects for Microsoft® Access 2000 book contains a useful appendix, Working with Access. It reviews the basic database objects you will create in Access, how to use the different objects views, and using the Office Assistant to get help. The goal is to provide a review of Access for students who need to brush up on their skills. Student Supplements
