Current, reliable, and convenient to use, this pocket-sized handbook is a concise, yet comprehensive, resource that presents the drugs used to treat respiratory and cardiac disease. Using a clinical organization, consistent format, and accessible language, it offers details concerning drug actions, uses and interactions, specific routes, pediatric and adult dosages, as well as detailed pharmacokinetics, contraindications, and side effects.
This pocket guide focuses on the drugs utilized to treat respiratory and cardiac diseases. It is written to serve as a stand-alone resource and reference. However, it has a powerful integrative component and several features that can extend its use. These features are as follows:
Unique Organization: Instead of a purely alphabetical listing of a sea of drugs, we have broken it down into therapeutic drug classifications for ease of referencing and comparison. For example, Section 1 focuses on the various categories of bronchodilators. After a brief discussion concerning bronchodilators, the specific bronchodilators are then listed with individual drug monographs. This allows for a concise grouping for understanding the different mechanisms of actions to bronchodilate, seeing the spectrum of drugs available, and finally comparing and contrasting bronchodilators in one section versus leafing through indexes.
Optional Integrative Textbook: This guide actually grew out of the writing of Integrated Cardiopulmonary Pharmacology. If further reading and information is desired, the reader can be directed to the appropriate chapter. The textbook also has an integrated website that will be used to add to the drug guide.
Get Connected to the Web: Although the drug guide can certainly stand on its own, there are two distinct websites that serve as a powerful adjunct that can greatly facilitate learning and keep both faculty and students up on the "latest and greatest" in pharmacology. One of the difficult aspects of pharmacology is that by the time a textbook is produced there is a wealth of new information, some theories are challenged, and new drugs or types of therapies are beginning to emerge.
This special feature will connect the reader to a managed companion web page with additional drug information, new drugs, animations, videos, audio glossary and drug pronunciation, sample tests, and references. For example, in the bronchodilator section you will be instructed where to go on the website to view a video on administering an MDI treatment or measuring peak expiratory flow rates to monitor the effectiveness of bronchodilator therapy. If you are not sure of the correct drug pronunciation, you can go to the website to hear the audio pronunciation. The website can be entered at www.prenhall.com/colbert .
The additional website that can be accessed is www.prenhall.com/drugguides . This site provides periodic updates on new drugs, links to drug-related sites, drug-related tools, medication administration techniques, common herbal remedies, and much more.
Appendices: The appendix section contains treatment algorithms for diseases such as asthma and COPD, clinical information about such asthma classifications, abbreviations, and various other short, focused, clinically applied information.
