Synopsis

Designed to provide learners with the information and practice they need to compete in a competitive job market, Instant AutoCAD: 3D Modeling Using AutoCAD 2004 blends theory and practical applications in a hands-on, lab and exercise-intensive look at all the important concepts needed to draw in true 3D. The book’s light-hearted tone and user-friendly, instructional framework features lists of key ideas found in each chapter; stylized print to emphasize key concepts; hundreds of visual aids to clarify discussions; tip boxes that offer useful insights into the program; clear, concise command sequences; sections that summarize chapter essentials; and hands-on exercises to review new ideas. Based on AutoCAD 2004, it explores the theory behind 3D modeling, how to prepare for 3D construction, the various kinds of 3D construction, and how to effectively enhance and present 3D models. It is based on new concepts in 3D Modeling, especially the use of solid model

From the Back Cover

This is the next book in the Instant AutoCAD® series, continuing the tradition of delivering technical information in a quick and easy format. With integrated Hands-On sessions to illustrate basic concepts and lots of questions, tests, and exercises to reinforce those basic concepts, it offers a look at architectural residential drawing using AutoCAD®, from floor plans to 3D modeling.

This textbook was written using AutoCAD® 2000i, but will work just as well using AutoCAD® 2000 or AutoCAD LT® 2000 or 2000i. The differences are minimal in regard to this book. The exception is 3D Modeling in Chapter 8;, where AutoCAD LT® does not support some of these advanced features.

The text contains a number of features that make the basic ideas more concrete and clear. These include:

  • a list of Key Concepts at the start of each chapter
  • an In a Nutshell conclusion of each chapter
  • brief Hands-On labs throughout each chapter to reinforce newly learned concepts
  • a Testing. . . testing. . . 1, 2, 3 section of fill-in-the-blank, true-false, multiple choice, and matching questions at the end of each chapter
  • a What? question section at the end of each chapter
  • a Let's Get Busy list of related assignments at each chapter end
  • a number of Tip boxes to introduce important ideas
  • font enlargement of key ideas
  • hundreds of drawings, menus, and icons to add clarity

An integrated CD-ROM Learning Assistant is included with this text. It provides:

  • hands-on practice for concepts presented in the text
  • models for the practice applications

Instant AutoCAD® 3D Modeling is the next text in the Instant AutoCAD Series ands it continues with the tradition of delivering technical information in a quick and easy format. This book covers all the basics of 3-dimensional modeling: from initial setup to photorealistic renderings and drawing layout. Ours is a no-frills approach. We only include the necessary information to get you modeling quickly and offer a firm grounding in 3D modeling techniques.

You may be very familiar with AutoCAD's 2 dimensional drawing capabilities but it's also a very powerful 3D modeling program. AutoCAD contains main features that are solely for 3D construction. There are specific toolbars such as 3D Orbit or Solids as well as UCS working planes or Landscape objects. Once you've created a 3D solid model, you'll be introduced to commands to alter it in many ways. You can add or subtract material, move features, and hollow out the model.

The aim of this text is to give you information and hands-on practical experience so that you'll be able to make use of this complex interfaces in the most efficient manner possible. It contains hundreds of figures to illustrate the various processes needed to move from a 2D drawings to a fully annotated drawing using a 3D solid model as the base. For each new process, concise theory is given followed by a practical application to reinforce the newly obtained information.

The layout of the book is explained in Chapter 1 but it's essential to emphasize that various components that comprise a chapter.

  • The first section in each chapter lists concepts that will be covered in the chapter.
  • Throughout the chapter you may see a variety of things:
    • stylized print lifting an idea from the pages for emphasis.
    • tip boxes that stress a certain fact about the program.
    • command sequences in a very simple print that present the user's desired input in bold letters, and,
    • hands-on exercises to reinforce a new idea.
  • As well, at the end of each chapter you'll find
    • a short-answer test.
    • a series of longer-answer questions, and
    • a number of assignments.

Remember that the more you put into it in effort, study. and exercise completion, the more you'll take away from it in learning. Its up to you.

An accompanying CD-ROM contains numerous exercises and models so you can learn in record time.

AutoCAD for 3D modeling is a very complex and powerful program but the experience of learning it shouldn't be dull or threatening. Rather, with lots of exercises, informal languaue, and friendly graphics it may be easier to learn. Some topics, those you need to perform more often like the most basic operations, are explained more fully while others leave you to investigate on your own. We're sure this is the start of a journey that will bring wider horizons, lucrative results, and the pleasure that comes with mastery of a new tool.
