This book originated from an introductory engineering graphics and computer aided design (CAD) course taught at North Dakota State University (NDSU). The purpose of the course was to introduce the engineering student to Sketching, Visualization and Parametric Modeling. The emphasis of the course was that CAD is cornerstone of the engineering program and a way for the engineer to communicate design ideas graphically. This book along with earlier editions was developed with this philosophy.

This edition details the use of Pro/Engineer Wildfire and contains all new high-resolution screen captures. Additional models have been added. These are the parts which are used in the ButterFly Valve, Vise and HoldDown Clamp assemblies.

The layout of the book is similar to the previous editions. However, the chapters on drawings, sections, and tolerancing have been moved to occur earlier in the book. Furthermore, the Redefine option has been moved to Chapter 2 right after the user is introduced to the Sketcher. This change was made in order to show the student some techniques for dealing with errors introduced during the construction of a feature.

New tutorials have been added, including one on using points in the Sketcher, as well as some additional tutorials on dealing with failed features. Furthermore, in order to increase the effectiveness of the tutorials, the objectives of each tutorial are listed at the beginning of the tutorial.

Earlier editions of this text used short term and long term projects. This edition follows the same approach. In order to show how the tutorials and hence the projects are related to one another, a list of parts and assemblies is given. The reader should consult this list when planning on which tutorial to work through.

Throughout the book, Pro/E options and commands are written in italic face. Snapshots of the icons have been added in line with the text to allow the reader to readily find the feature on the software interface.

Additional exercises are provided at the end of each chapter to further reinforce the options and concepts presented in that chapter. The models in these exercises were selected to challenge the student in the use of the options under consideration. In many of the chapters, new assignments have been added. Many of the exercises from the previous editions have been reordered in terms of complexity and/or new figures produced.

Additional parts and formats have been bundled with this book and are needed to complete some of the tutorials. These parts and formats may be downloaded from the Prentice-Hall website.
