Handbook of School Counseling emerged from conversations between two counselor educators. We had been teaching school counselors for over a decade and agreed with other school counselor educators around the country that we needed instructional materials reflective of the transformations that have taken place in the school counseling profession. The National Standards for School Counseling Programs developed by the American School Counselors Association (ASCA), school counseling specialty standards articulated by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), the expanded view of school counselors' roles emerging from recent reform efforts, and program models frequently adopted by state departments of education have all informed the content and structure of this text. The "Three Cs" model of school counseling (counseling, coordination, and consultation) has been updated and expanded over the past decade to include leadership, advocacy, and collaboration as primary school counselor roles. The addition of these roles, both in practice and in training, provides the school counselor opportunities to firmly establish links between the school counseling program and the total educational enterprise, thereby operationalizing the concept of school counselors working collaboratively with other educational professionals to maximize the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students.

Our goal has been to provide a book focused on teaching school counseling students how to develop, implement, manage, and evaluate a comprehensive developmental school counseling program that contributes to the mission of the school in meaningful and productive ways. To be successful ire this task, we have used the specialty area content for school counselor preparation articulated by CACREP and the National Standards for School Counseling Programs adopted by ASCA and integrated them with the widely adopted organizational structure articulated by Norman Gysbers and Patricia Henderson.

Coverage

Handbook of School Counseling provides counselor educators with a text that emphasizes the school counselor's role in education with particular emphasis on placing counselor interventions in the school context.

The text covers the following areas of emphasis:

  • Foundations of School Counseling. Chapters 1-2 are designed to increase students' understanding of the school environment and the school counselor's place in the total school program. Emphasis is placed on the development of the school counseling profession, factors that promote or inhibit learning, program models and their components, and skills needed by school counselors to successfully coordinate a program.
  • Contextual Dimensions of School Counseling. Chapters 3-5 are designed to increase students' understanding of the school counselor's role as an educational leader, advocate, and change agent and of the school counseling program as an integral part of the school success of all students. Emphasis is placed on developmentally appropriate counselor skills and interventions in the context of the four program components: guidance curriculum, individual planning, responsive services, and system support.
  • Standards-Based School Counseling Programs. Chapters 6-12 include studies in specific approaches used by school counselors to achieve program goals and objectives in elementary, middle, and secondary schools. Chapters provide concrete grade level examples of how sample programs are organized around implementation of the National Standards for School Counseling Programs (ASCA) and local needs assessment results. Each of the four program components—guidance curriculum, individual planning, responsive services, and system support—is described for each grade level.

Format

Information is provided in an easy-to-follow format with a logical structure from which to teach. The following sections are included in each chapter:

  • Case. Real-world case studies introduce the major topics in each chapter. Real problems are posed that can be addressed by students after mastering the material covered in each chapter.
  • Chapter introduction. Each chapter begins with a list of objectives keyed to the important concepts.
  • Margin notes. Throughout the text, brief notes and questions challenge students to think critically about the material being presented. Also, active learning strategies are incorporated to challenge students to reflect on, discuss, identify, and apply the concepts they are studying.
  • Text boxes. Concrete examples from real-life school counseling programs predominate.
  • Portfolio components. At the end of each chapter, students are encouraged to complete one or more of the suggested activities for their professional school counselor portfolios. These activities can help students identify not only individual areas of strength but also challenges to their development as they progress through the text.
