This is the long awaited second edition of the best-selling guide to Programming in C++. The authors discuss programming issues and develop topics of C++ programming paradigms and their supporting language features in parallel. Their goal is to foster understanding of C++ beyond simple syntax, so that it can be used as a flexible and effective programming tool. Interweaves a presentation of the C++ language features with discussion of the techniques and paradigms for which they were designed. Includes new information on key langauges features, such as templates, exception handling, and wide characters. For programmers familiar with C who are interested in programming in C++.

Since the appearance of the first edition of this book in 1989, the C++ user community has continued to grow rapidly, new programming techniques have appeared on an almost daily basis, and the C++ language itself has continued to evolve. The ``fertile exchange of ideas'' that marked the state of the C++ community in 1989 continues unabated today, aided by the standardization process sponsored jointly by the American National Standards Institute and the International Standards Organization.
As book and compiler writers, our task is no easier now than it was in 1989. Faced with describing an evolving language, it is tempting to try to cover every detail of the emerging standard and every nuance of every major programming technique. Response to the first edition of Programming in C++, however, indicated that our decision to limit the discussion of language features in preference to discussion of programming issues was the correct one.
Therefore, we continue to develop topics of programming paradigms and their supporting language features in parallel, in order to lead the reader beyond a simple syntactic understanding of the C++ language to its use as a flexible and effective programming tool.
We are indebted to many individuals\(colleagues, students, and strangers\(who contributed directly or indirectly to this second edition. Special thanks are given to Christopher Aoki for his support, patience, and persistent encouragement. Sarah Hewins lent her sharp eye and sharper commentary to various drafts of the manuscript; her support and impatience were much appreciated.
Clovis Tondo has been a driving force behind the production of this second edition. Over a period of years he has provided motivation, encouragement, technical review, and an occasional swift kick to keep us moving.
Hiroshi Koyama, who translated the first edition into Japanese, contributed the material and examples in Chapter 1 on wide characters and wide-character strings, and provided aid as a reviewer.
We thank Hiroshi for his contributions as well as his encouragement through the seasons of writing.
