9780132155625: Grammar Lost and Found

Synopsis

Grammar Lost and Found is an accessible, humorous approach designed to teach you twenty common grammar, punctuation and spelling errors. It explains the basic rules in a conversational tone, using straightforward examples, designed to explain the complexities of the language while being easily understood. What makes this workbook unique is that each concept covered is accompanied by a fictional story in the chapter following a student on his first day of school.  Each chapter emphasizes the one rule it is matched with.  Exercises at the end of every five chapters encourage you to synthesize the topics you have learned and apply them to your writing.

About the Author

Mary Lynn O’Shea is a recently retired journalism professor from Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario.  During her 20 years at the college she has taught various communications courses, including newspaper and business writing, editing, reports and presentations and advertising copy writing.  She has also developed and written curriculum.

Grammar and language skills are a particular interest for her, as her students quickly discover.  Once they accept that there is no avoiding this reality, they come to realize that learning grammar does not have to mean undue suffering.  Mary Lynn counts humour as an essential teaching and learning tool.

As a freelance writer, she has written numerous articles for a variety of newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, the Toronto Star, Chatelaine, Canadian Living and the Chicago Sun-Times.

Review

“[Grammar Lost & Found] offers simple directions to fix the most common grammar and mechanical errors used by the basic college learner.”

--Anita Agar, Sheridan College

“This is a text that concisely and engagingly takes students through the finer points of language use and would be good preparation for those who will have to do a lot of writing for work, like law clerks, PR professionals or journalists.”

--Professor, Humber College
