From School Library Journal:
YA-- Outstanding graphics, a readable text, and accurate data make this a must purchase for earth-science students and curious teenagers. Dinosaurs are depicted where they lived--in the conifer forest, not the tropics. Norman uses a first-person narrative to maintain interest as he discusses dinosaurs through their life and death, and explains how their discovery came about. A special chapter is devoted to birds. Throughout, the geology is related to what was happening biologically at the time. The timelines, colorful artwork, and clear diagrams make it easy to understand the topics under discussion. Unique comparisons clarify size and structure. The concluding chapter relates a few of the animation and robotic techniques used in the making of the TV series Dinosaurs! , for which Norman was a consultant. The ``further reading'' is divided by reading levels; the comprehensive index is divided into subtopics and is easy to use. --Claudia Moore, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA

From Library Journal:
This is a tie-in to the television series of the same name that was shown on the Arts & Entertainment network. Many of the illustrations in this book will be familiar to dinosaur fans since they have often been reprinted elsewhere. However. the text is surprisingly interesting and scientifically sophisticated. Norman is a British paleontologist who was a contributor to the definitive scientific treatise on dinosaurs, The Dinosauria ( LJ 3/15/91). He describes the work of paleontologists as "a detective story," and shows how clues from the fossil record helped develop the current thought on dinosaurs. The subject is treated at a level for general readers, but without oversimplification. The only condescension to TV is a short final chapter on how they made the animated dinosaur models for the show. For popular science collections.
