Discusses how to lessen the chance of being laid off, search for a new job, manage finances if unemployed, create job opportunities, and get promoted

If you thought surviving a round of layoffs was a matter of competence, think again. Fuller (The Negotiator's Handbook, Prentice-Hall, 1991) has collected a compendium of advice for career-anxious people. For those intent on staying in their current job, those wishing for a new job or career, those needing to relocate, or any of the above needing to manage finances better, this book relates strategies for success. The topics and advice range from dealing with bosses, office politics, and self-promotion to jumping ship and starting your own business. Because this book covers so much ground, much of the advice is sketchy or intuitive, but as a trigger for further ideas, this is a comprehensive source. For smaller collections looking for a single purchase, this is an especially good choice.?Joshua Cohen Mid-Hudson Lib. System, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Fuller might be called the Bob Vila of the workplace, providing "tools, tips, and techniques" for getting the job done. He has written such books as The First-Time Supervisor's Survival Guide (1995) and The Supervisor's Portable Answer Book (1990), and he writes how-to columns for regional business periodicals like the Atlanta Business Chronicle. This time he shows how to be a job survivor in today's uncertain work world, compiling tips for avoiding job cutbacks, changing jobs or careers, handling relocation, and guarding against financial problems associated with job change. Taken singly, his tips are usually obvious ("make yourself indispensable by volunteering for thankless tasks" or "eat at home to save money when in between jobs" ), but those who feel their jobs are in jeopardy probably have other things on their minds, and Fuller's advice might help sort out and eliminate problems.
