This is a history of film. Since the first edition of this book, an increasing amount of historical research, especially on the American film, has appeared. Some of it has centered on the very early years in an effort to understand what the film forms and contents of the first decade actually were. In the revisions of this book an attempt has been made to incorporate the findings of contemporary research. At the same time, the method and basic structure of the original edition have been preserved.
