Synopsis

The objectives of this book are to provide the student with a clear understanding of the basic principles of power systems and to stimulate them to study the subject at a more advanced level. It deliberately omits some of the more advanced concepts such as stability and load flow calculations. the basic concepts covered are three-phase systems, real, apparent and reactive power, the per-unit system, control of frequency and voltage and symmetrical fault calculations. It includes an explanation of the properties of major components of power system: alternator, overhead lines; underground cables; switchgear and the power transformer, development of simple equivalent circuits to represent the above components and a chapter on primary energy sources for electricity generation including energy storage and system management.

From the Back Cover

The Prentice Hall Essence of Engineering Series provides a concise, practical and uniform introduction to the core components of an undergraduate engineering degree. Acknowledging the recent changes within Higher Education, this approach uses a variety of pedagogical tools, case-studies, worked examples and self-test questions, to underpin the student's learning. Details of all titles in the series can be found on page ii. The book provides a clear understanding of the basic principles needed by those studying electric power systems for the first time. This introductory book focuses on the key concepts of three-phase systems, real, apparent and reactive power, the per-unit system, control of frequency and voltage, and symmetrical fault calculations. Features of this book includes: Explanation of the properties of the major components of a power system; simple equivalent circuits are developed to represent each of these components; it examines primary energy sources for electricity generation, including energy storage and system management; worked examples and exercises throughout the book reinforce knowledge. Intended as a thorough yet accessible introduction to electric power systems, this book assumes no prior knowledge, and will be invaluable reading for undergraduate students of electrical engineering.
