YA Concise explanations of some skills that high-school and college students need to survive a liberal arts curriculum. How to Develop and Write a Research Paper suggests a seven- to nine-week time frame for a completed paper, from topic selection to final draft. The poetry volume discusses how to read poetry and to understand it in relation to the poet's life, where that is useful. Various types of criticism are explained, and several poems are analyzed. The book concludes with a sample essay on a Robert Frost poem and includes a detailed glossary of terms used in discussing poetry. The fiction volume looks at the traditional and obvious aspects of fiction which term papers examine (narrative structure, character, structure and technique, etc.), concluding with criteria that students might use to critique a work of fiction. An appendix offers study questions to help students focus their reading of fiction and to assist them in writing appropriate thesis questions for critical essays on fiction. The contents are not appreciably different from the wealth of such books available, but the quality of the format makes the book useful if not unique. The drama title begins by discussing stage history as it affects play writing. It continues with an explanation of characters, dramatic structures, dramatic language, and mise-en-scene, among other topics. The four books work together to provide a systematic study guide to essay writing and critical reading of assigned texts which will stand students well at all levels of education from high school on.
