Review

VisualAge and Transaction Processing in a Client/Server Environment is the book you want if your organization has chosen VisualAge as its OLTP development environment and you need to understand how to make things happen as quickly as possible. This beginner-level guide teaches you how to implement online transaction processing (OLTP) systems under IBM's Open Blueprint specification with VisualAge.

The authors open with a general discussion of Open Blueprint and client-server relationships. They then go on to discuss the VisualAge way of conceptualizing transactions and using both procedural and object-oriented programs to facilitate them. The majority of the book covers programming in VisualAge, including the special issues involved in implementing Customer Information Control System (CICS), Advanced Program-to-Program Communication (APPC), and TCP/IP in VisualAge. The book explains coding issues in terms of a combination of C, COBOL, and IBM Smalltalk. A companion diskette includes a record-generation utility for VisualAge.
