I have added 108 new figures and considerable updating. Also included are many new references, including several from a popular marine magazine Oceanus. As in previous editions, I have tried to explain and describe oceanography in a manner understandable for nonscientists. I have stressed the role of the separate scientific disciplines in their application to oceanography. Social science, such as law and economics, are also included. I have used both metric and English measurements throughout the text, and have defined new terms when they are first used. I have tended to emphasize examples of marine phenomena from the United States and hope that this does not cause inconvenience to foreign readers.
