Soon other animals (a bear, an elephant, a bull, a giraffe and rabbits) try his upset mother's empty pocket, but they find that it isn't just right. Meanwhile, Joey is doing the same thing looking for a home, even trying a pelican's beak before settling in a mail pouch. The next morning the postman delivers Joey to his mother along with her bills. Joey is now sure that there is no place like home, even if you do have to clean your room. This is a sequel to the upstart kangaroo's debut, starting when he refuses to clean up the mess in his room (Mama's pouch). With his bindlestiff on his shoulder, Joey runs away, looking for a new home, but they're all taken. Meantime, Mama's pouch is for rent but not suitable for any of the animals who investigate the space. After a while, the wanderer hitches a ride in a postman's bag and fetches up back home, so Mama discards the junk mail and welcomes her Joey, thus ending the non-stop surprises illustrated with verve in Kent's boldly colored pictures.
