KADS has become the de facto standard structured methodology for building knowledge-based (or 'expert') systems. This book provides a comprehensive but usable guide for putting KADS into practice, using a form of the methodology that addresses systems which include a mixture of knowledge-based and conventional components.
Features include a simplified, rational and comprehensive description of KADS; a consistent case study example based on a real-life development; separation of explanatory material from day-to-day use material; 'guided tours' to provide easy-to-use quick reference to KADS analysis and design; 'road maps' to provide a 'you are here' navigation aid within the book; and a comprehensive set of KADS libraries, bibliography and glossary.
The authors of this book were members of the original ESPRIT project which produced KADS. They have refined the methodology based on their own experiences of putting it into practice. With a combined experience of over 25 years in software engineering, over 15 of those involving knowledge-based systems development, the authors have used KADS regularly in their work at BNR Europe Limited (part of Northern Telecom) in the development of knowledge-based applications within the telecommunication industry.
