This manual is especially designed for students beginning college work, because they must undertake independent library research. Such students have often regarded the library as an orchard, where they wandered and tasted at pleasure; now they face it as I face a mechanic's toolbox--warily, with mingled respect and fear. What I print here I have been saying for years. I have said it in the classroom and in the library itself, showing reference sets and explaining their use. Alas, the pace was too fast. Haunted by vanishing class time, conscious of how much at best I must omit, I poured out lists, advice, definitions, until even the most attentive listener missed some point that, fortunately, can be preserved in print. This manual will explain, and a reader can absorb what it explains at his own speed.
