This book presents an integrated treatment of the structure, properties, processing and performance of engineering materials in service.The book starts by reviewing the stages of product development in industry, recycling of materials, and life cycle costing. Next, it discusses engineering materials and their processing in detail. Commonly used ferrous and non-ferrous metals and alloys are covered, as are polymers, ceramics, glasses and composites. Part II deals with topics common to all materials, including failure analysis and prevention, environmental degradation and its avoidance, and the effect of material and manufacturing processes on design. Finally, the book reviews the economics of materials and manufacturing processes; issues involved in selecting materials; and the use of computers and expert systems.
