Wurbs (civil engineering, Texas A&M U.) explains the practical application of systems analysis techniques to determine optimal storage capacities, storage allocations, and release policies for existing or proposed reservoir/river systems from the small and simple to the large and complex. He also outlines reservoir operation practices and associated computer modeling and optimization models, focusing on readily available, generalized stimulation packages. The proposed book will address the topic of optimizing reservoir system operations, which essentially means developing streamflow regulation strategies and operating rules which best fulfill specified objectives and making real-time release decisions within the framework of the operating rules. River/reservoir system managemen practices and associated modeling and analysis methods involve: minimizing the risks and consequences of water shortages and flooding; allocating storage capacity and water resources between multiple uses and users; optimizing the beneficial use of available resources; and minimizing adverse environmental impacts. Both water quantity and quality considerations are important. Multiple-purpose and multiple-reservoir system operations will be a major emphasis of the book.About the Author:
Ralph Wurbs has been on the civil engineering faculty of Texas A&M University since 1980.
