Sandra Rief, M.A., is the author of How to Reach and Teach ADD/ADHD Children and the coauthor of How to Reach and Teach All Students in the Inclusive Classroom. She has been a special education teacher for over twenty years, and in 1995, was named California Resource Specialist of the Year.
The purpose of The ADD/ADHD Checklist is to better understand children and teenagers with ADD/ADHD and the kind of support and intervention that is necessary for their success. Written in a simple, concise, easy-to-read checklist format, the book is packed with practical advice and information on a wide range of topics and is organized into the following five sections:
Introduction
There are at least two million children and adolescents with attention deficit disorders in the United States. Every classroom teacher has at least one student with ADD/ADHD in his or her classroom, and needs to be aware and knowledgeable about the nature of the disorder, as well as the strategies effective in reaching and teaching these students.
Parents of children with ADD/ADHD also need to be well-informed and equipped with the skills and strategies that help in managing and coping with inattentive, hyperactive, and impulsive behaviors. It is often not easy to live with a child who has ADHD (either at home or school). Knowledge about the disorder is very important, because when we understand what ADHD is, and how it affects the child, it helps us become more tolerant and empathetic.
The purpose of this book is to help readers gain insight and better understanding of children and teenagers with ADD /ADHD, as well as the kind of support and intervention that is necessary for their success. This book is designed in a simple, concise, easy-to-read format of checklists that address a number of topics.
There are sections with lists that provide basic information about ADD/ADHD, academic strategies for home and school, and other topics of importance for both parents and educators. One section of the book is written specifically for parents, because it addresses topics of interest that are relevant to meeting their child's needs at home. Another section is specifically for teachers-including checklists on topics that are of particular concern in the classroom. Suggested strategies in this section will help all students learn (not just those with attention deficit disorders). Although this book is primarily written for parents and teachers, many others interested in children with ADD/ADHD should find the information useful (i.e., physicians, mental health professionals, other school personnel, relatives).
I have had the privilege of teaching hundreds of children with attention deficit disorders and/or learning disabilities over the past 23 years. Some of my former students who had very significant to severe problems in elementary school are now doing extremely well - going to college and succeeding in their lives, in spite of the many challenges they and their families had to deal with over the years. In my teaching career I don't recall having ever met parents who don't want the best for their child, or who aren't interested in doing what they can to help their son or daughter. It is always preferable to be able to identify children with ADD/ADHD or any special needs early initiating interventions and supports at a young age in order to avoid some of the frustration, failure, and subsequent loss of self-esteem. However, it is NEVER too late to help a child. In many cases, the kind of help that makes a difference for a child does not take a huge effort on our part. Sometimes even small changes in the way we respond to our child/teen can lead to significant improvements. If I am able to convey any message throughout this book, I wish for it to be one of hope and optimism. When we work together - providing the necessary structure, guidance, encouragement, and support each and every one of our children can succeed! Sandra Rief
