I based Technical Editing on the premise that any document can be improved. With the loss of so many technical publications enclaves within companies, the task of improving technical documents falls, more and more, to technologists. Technical Editing offers these writers a parachute: an understanding of where the potential lingustic trouble spots are and the tools to troubleshoot them. Technical Editing is the technologist's drug-sniffing dog. The dog points to the problem, and the technologist makes the bust. For the last ten years, the method in Technical Editing has formed the basis of improving technologists' writing/editing skills at Texas Instruments; Motorola, Inc.; Ford Motor Co.; Abbott Laboratories, Forest Laboratories; Merck-Medco Rx Services; and other companies.
I wrote Technical Editing for beginners and veterans. Beginners who aspire to become technical editors or who want to improve their own documents can benefit; so, too, veteran technologists who want the ring of clarity, the impact of conciseness, and a professional correctness to their documents.
