Kindergarten-Grade 3 Unlike Petunia, Lucy Goose is anything but featherbrained, but her generous spirit gets her into the most peculiar situations. Watching her cope with 2,000 froggy house guests, a completely frozen water tank with attached bird, and a secret admirer with a chimney-pot stuck to his head will have gleeful readers laughing in no time. The five clever but uncomplicated episodes are presented in comic-strip format with simple, colorful illustrations and dialogue in balloonsvisually a bit more crowded than James Stevenson's books but seldom cramped. In closing, Lucy enthralls the young fowl at the Betty Bantam Day Nursery with the tale of an earthbound goose who, after seeing airborne birds, carpets, witches, peopleand even flights of stepslearns to fly by chasing the mailman; her audience immediately applies the lesson. ``It's the way I tell `em,'' she says smugly. Agreed. John Peters, New York Public Library

Lucy Goose's heart is certainly in the right place when she allows a mother frog and her 2001 tadpoles to stay in her birdbath. But by Christmas, when the frog family still has no pond of their own, it's time for drastic measuresLucy writes Santa. He gives her tickets (one for each frog) to a Frog Reserve, where they'll all be safe. That's one of five stories; in another, Lucy has unexpected guests for dinner, and all her meal plans are upset by well-meaning friends. Lucy's tales begin as funny muddles, but she always lands on those webbed feet. Weatherill's comic-strip format will appeal to those readers just beyond picture book age, and there are hundreds of kid-pleasing details; the sight of thousands of frogs hopping toward their destiny is but one delight. Ages 612.
