Synopsis

Holy Disorders takes Oxford don and part time detective Gervase Fen to the town of Tolnbridge, where he is happily bounding around with a butterfly net until the cathedral organist is murdered, giving Fen the chance to play sleuth. The man didn’t have an enemy in the world, and even his music was inoffensive: could he have fallen foul of a nest of German spies or of the local coven of witches, ominously rumoured to have been practicing since the 17th century? Tracking down the answer pleases Fen immensely – only the reader will have a better time. Erudite, eccentric and entirely delightful – Before Morse, Oxford’s murders were solved by Gervase Fen, the most unpredictable detective in classic crime fiction.

From AudioFile

What fun! The highlights of this book include academic and religious eccentrics, a character named Henry Fielding (who must field many questions about his famous name), and a marriage proposal beside a radish garden. Narrator Stephen Thorne enhances this delightful mystery set in England during WWII. Thorne expertly presents characters, both aristocrats and servants; quaint accents; and puns and wordplay. His delivery of the unflattering descriptions of characters is hilarious. Gervase Fen is called upon to solve the murder of a church organist who had not an enemy in the world. Was it spies? Or could it have been the witches who have been active in the village since the seventeenth century? A grand choice for those who enjoy the Golden Age of British detective fiction. Cover artwork by George Tute. ; Penguin Classic Crime; 224 pages; In the sleepy provincial town of Tolnbridge an attempt is made on the life of the cathedral's organist, Denis Brooks. Oxford Don Gervase Fen, who happens to be in the town at the time, summons his old friend, composer Geoffrey Vintner, to replace Brooks. But someone, somewhere, attempts to stop Geoffrey's arrival. It seems that wartime Tolnbridge has a great many secrets to conceal, and only the insufferably arrogant Fen has the mental ability to get to the bottom of the puzzle. Mass Market PB.
