A guide to thirty years of Grammy Awards describes what goes on behind the scenes at the awards ceremony, the politics involved, the winners and losers over the years, and little-known Grammy trivia. Original.

Self-avowed awards freak O'Neil follows his successful The Emmys ( LJ 6/15/92) with a similarly entertaining and thorough historical romp on the way to music mecca, the Grammy. Beginning with the inaugural award ceremony in 1958, O'Neil chronologically details all nominees and winners of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences signature award through 1991. In addition to the box scores, O'Neil summarizes each year, noting industry and media response to all the surprises, upsets, and sure bets along the way. An introductory essay and appendixes including trivia, top winners and losers, Hall of Fame Awards, and Lifetime Achievement Award Honorees are also provided. Lists of Grammy winners, such as the Academy's own The Grammy Winners Book (1991), are easily attained, but the full scope of O'Neil's coverage and the context in which he places the awards is tops. An excellent choice for both reference and leisure collections.
