Reviews

Yet another publication promising to lead adults through the maze of children's videos, this book offers both predictable choices and some thoughtful and unusual suggestions, along with practical advice. A journalist covering children's video, MacAlpine is also on the National Advisory Board of the Coalition for Quality Children's Video. Using a topical arrangement by genre (features, music, discovery, activity, literary adaptations), MacAlpine recommends titles with medium to lengthy annotations, written in a breezy and fresh style. The videos range from the well known (Disney) and the questionable (Barney) to classics (Children's Circle and Rabbit Ears) to some little-known treasures (Canadian features and National Film Board of Canada animation), with some commendable and excellent titles from independents (KIDVIDZ and Lightyear Entertainment). Each chapter features a brief "interview" with an authority or celebrity about the topic. Selection tips, ordering information, and helpful resources are provided. Although always open to quibbles about inclusions and exclusions, this is a sensible, sensitive, and knowledgeable guide to generally top-notch videos for young viewers and their families.
