Synopsis
Chamber music has frequently and rightly been described as the music of friends, in allusion to the intimate team work the playing of it involves and its special character. The term itself covers a huge field of beautiful and still far too little known music the exact limits of which are undefined. For the purpose of this book, a companion volume to the Concerto and The Symphony it is take to range from duet works to octets, and to cover the time from the early eighteenth century to the present day Haydn is given pride of place as having developed the string quartet, the central medium of chamber music to a wonderful peak of perfection. Chapters follow on the various kinds of chamber music by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and many others up to Bartok, whose six string quartets are considered to be in the great classical line The remaining composers are grouped together according to their countries of origin.
