Synopsis

Ten years ago, nine-year-old Freda walked into an underground restaurant and straight into a hostage situation. Those thirty-six hours still haunt her every move. But was she just an innocent victim manipulated by the one stranger who showed her any kindness – the gunman? A newspaper reporter is starting to pry. He says he knows things about that night. Freda must start revealing and dealing with her burden of survival. This gripping thriller grabs listeners' attention from the first introspective moments through to the explosive ending.

About the Author

Ian Bone has written a wide variety of books for many age groups of young readers, ranging from picture books to young adult novels. He started out as a television director
and producer for Australian television.

From AudioFile

This erratic story recounts the long-term psychological effects of Freda Opperman's thirty-six-hour experience as a hostage of a deranged gun-totting man in a fast food restaurant when she was 9. Flashing back to the incident, Opperman slowly reveals her struggles with the madman and the other hostages, and, later on, her strained relationships with her parents and friends. Caroline Lee stumbles through this production. She never acquires a distinct voice for the different narrative angles and doesn't manage to vocally differentiate the adult Freda from the child Freda, a weakness that causes occasional confusion. However, her consistency with the character of the deranged man fits perfectly with the text. L.E. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
