The first title in Arthur Ransome’s classic series, originally published in 1930: for children, for grownups, for anyone captivated by the world of adventure and imagination. Swallows and Amazons introduces the lovable Walker family, the camp on Wild Cat Island, the able-bodied catboat Swallow, and the two intrepid Amazons, Nancy and Peggy Blackett. “The author really does know how to write for children: in other words, he writes of what he himself delights in and so pleases without any effort both young and old.” –The Nation “This book is both silvery present and golden retrospect. All that is tedious and sullen and deceptive vanishes in its sunniness as clouds vanish in the tempered air of a summer day.... We think that the book will last, too, from edition unto edition.” –Saturday Review

Arthur Ransome was born in 1884. He was in Russia in 1917 and witnessed the Revolution, which he reported for the Manchester Guardian. After escaping to Scandinavia, he settled in the Lake District of England with his Russian wife where, in 1929, he wrote Swallows and Amazons. Thus began a writing career that has produced some of the best children s literature of all time.
Alex Jennings performs this beloved classic of English children's literature in splendid fashion. His shaded character portrayals and enthusiastic narration make it clear that he loves the book. Published in 1930, Swallows and Amazons is about six children who sail, camp, and find timeless adventure during a holiday in England's Lake District. It is a literate book full of magic for children and adults, which Jennings's reading amplifies. The many characters are distinct individuals--from the Australian mom to a neighboring farm wife to serious older siblings and the head-over-heels enthusiastic younger kids. Jennings's pace quickens when the sailboat battles occur and relaxes when the children collapse around the fire. Listening, we lose ourselves in the golden days. Let's hope that BBC Audiobooks plans to produce the entire series. A.C.S. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
