Synopsis
At first Andy Robson thought he would never settle down in Lilburn where he had come to stay with his Aunt Florrie and Uncle Adam after his father's accident in the mine. Everything was new and strange - the hedges in blossom, the patches of burnt heather on the fell slopes, the famous Lilburn White Cattle which his uncle tended, and above all, the quietnss of the country side broken only by the sound of sheep bleating and birds calling - so different from the noisy, bustling streets of Sleetburn, the mining village where he lived.
But this was not all he had to face. The different way of life in the Northumbrian countryside bothered him too; the early hours, the strange accent and vocabulary, the odd custom of teaching the boys to knit as well as the girls, his uncle's habit of leaving his socks in the oven overnight, and the local method of fighting. But his greatest problems were mean, stupid Mr. Ridley, the schoolmaster, and his favourite Billy Craggs, the school's fat and vicious wrestling champion.
